Innovating for the future

Thousands of people from healthcare organisations around the world descended on the Healthcare Innovation Expo 2013 in London recently.

The event is the largest and most exciting showpiece of its kind in Europe and a key element in the NHS’ drive to transform healthcare services. It provided an opportunity for attendees to see the latest innovations from around the world and to exchange ideas.

Innovation has a huge role to play transforming the NHS into a truly world class healthcare system that we can all be proud of. That’s according to David Nicholson, chief executive of the NHS, and a key note speaker at the event. And by working in partnership with business, academia and social enterprises, healthcare organisations can drive innovation at a time of reform and change.

BT is one of the main sponsors of the conference and is playing a pivotal role in connecting healthcare. Among the innovations on show, BT’s telehealth, telecare and mobility solutions proved of real interest as the NHS looks to improve the patient experience while improving productivity and efficiency.

The event also coincided with NHS Change Day, an event started by NHS staff to help create change in the organisation. Speakers including Mike Farrar, chief executive of NHS Confederation and Tim Kelsey, national director for patients and information, highlighted how a culture and mindset of innovation were critical to a sustainable NHS.

Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for health, said that Expo showcased why he is optimistic about the future of health and social care. His vision is to create a paperless NHS. BT’s vision for a world of connected healthcare.
